Ginger Fox’s Magical Works Stir Childhood Fantasies
My world begins with an alarm clock and every morning it rings. After getting up, with fuzzy eyes I stumble into the kitchen for coffee that warms up memories of dreams I had the night before. In my dreams colors danced as shapes; contrasting between stark and eerie. The way light and dark dared each other in these shapes, they flickered with my eyes behind closed curtains. Back to reality I open my laptop and begin working. The memory of the fantastical fantasies fade into the screen, and another day passes.
I hadn’t noticed the feeling of forgetting the magic fabricated by my brain every night. Also, I never thought twice about it until I was face to face with a fox in an 18th century red coat. Birds perched on his shoulders and delicately on his hand. Purple shadows playing in the background against rolling hills and sprigs of flowers peeking from behind his shoulder. A smirk, a look of mischievousness across the fox’s face in the Ginger Fox Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Where had I seen this before? Why did it feel so familiar and so far away at the same time.
The painting beside it was of a girl, Alice-esque, seated atop a cigar box and book. She is reading to an attentive zebra and a wood pecker perched on top of a globe with a rolling landscape painted on a curtain behind them. Hanging from unseen corners, a plume, an atomic cloud ever so faintly boils in the background. It was like breaking the fourth wall. Viewing Ginger Fox’s work was like being let in on the secret, as if these worlds have been staged the whole time – but where?
As I gazed at canvas after canvas, it becomes apparent what Fox is playing on. The magical realism is such because it exists within us all; Fantastical animals adjacent to whimsical children exploring books and musical instruments, the floating decorum of flowers and fruits, birds guiding our eyes, and our feathered friends escorting us through whimsical reverie. It’s a dreamy childhood fantasy, yet, there is a silver lining of truth within Ginger Fox’s work. Reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland and The Chronicles of Narnia, fused with traditional circus figures ingrained in our prepubescent collective memory, we arrive at a product of our cognitive ether. Fox has encompassed generations of subconscious awe and wonderment in 4’ x 5’ acrylic on canvas masterpieces.
Fox has melded childhood mischievousness and fantastical imagination to reveal within us the compartment of our subconscious youth. That little rice grain that exists within all of us, that once engulfed us, that wound the ordinary into the extraordinary. Get swept away into the clouds and break from confining stages and frames while viewing Ginger Fox’s Magical Realism.
